Sheikh Zayed laid the cornerstone in 1984 and returned two years later for the opening, attended by Ali Abdullah Saleh; the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development financed a second stage including 66 kilometres of irrigation channels. Ownership is left blank because control in Marib is contested. Current operating condition was not established from any source opened. NOTE ON CONDITION: no source opened establishes the dam's state today. Marib has been a front line since 2015, and the stage records only that the dam was completed and has not been reported lost.
