The al-Khafseh facility is one of the most important in Syria, producing an average of 400 million litres of drinking water daily; drawing raw water from the Euphrates River it is the sole source of drinking water for over two million people for the entire city of Aleppo and eastern areas of the governorate; an air strike hit the plant in November 2015, it was deliberately shut down on 16 January 2016, and operations resumed on 4 March 2016. Records that since 2006 Aleppo also draws its water from the Euphrates through a pipeline running west from Lake Assad. The 400 million litres a day is a reported average production, not a contracted annual volume, and is not annualised here. Coordinates left blank: no plant-level feature exists in OpenStreetMap. Transliteration varies across UNICEF documents between al-Khafseh, Alkhafsa and Al Khafsa. A later UNICEF Syria story of 26 September 2021 on rehabilitating the plant's sedimentation tanks is bot-walled and was not opened, so nothing from it is carried here. Current operating condition was not established from any source opened.
