Haditha Dam is the only dam on the Euphrates inside Iraq and the second largest storage dam after Mosul; works started in 1977 and were completed in 1988; body 57 m tall and 8,950 m long in three parts with a mealy dolomite core and asphaltic diaphragm; lake capacity 8.2 billion m3 at the maximum operating level of 147 m a.s.l. with 5.8 billion m3 live; spillway of six 16 m openings passing 11,000 m3/s; hydroelectric plant of six Kaplan units totalling 570 MW. Detailed design and implementation of the hydroelectric plant were entrusted to Energoprojekt while Technopromexport carried out the other designs and general supervision with the Directorate General of Dams.
