Activated sludge with diffused aeration on a 72 ha site 4 km west of Tabriz on the lands of Qaramalek village, on the south bank of the Aji Chay at the city's lowest point, fed by gravity; three modules, each for 612,000 people plus 20 per cent of the domestic volume as industrial effluent; studies from 1353, resumed on a revised basis from 1361; construction by contractor from early 1374 and equipment installation from 1378; in service in Tir 1380 at a cost of over 50 billion rials plus 24 million German marks; earthworks 500,000 m3, formwork 200,000 m2, reinforcement 6,000 tonnes and concrete 110,000 m3; phase one power demand 4 MW; design effluent below 20 mg/l BOD5, 30 mg/l suspended solids and 0.5 mg/l residual chlorine; the works comprise five screw pumps, coarse screens at 100 mm and fine screens at 20 mm, three ultrasonic Parshall flumes, three grit chambers at three minutes retention at 3.8 m3/s, eight primary sedimentation tanks, eight aeration tanks served by seven blowers, eight circular secondary clarifiers, three chlorination tanks at fifteen minutes minimum retention, two primary and four secondary sludge thickeners, four anaerobic digesters of 3,000 m3 useful volume each at about 35 days retention with a constant-pressure gas holder, fourteen concrete sludge drying beds and three sludge lagoons; dried sludge goes to agriculture as fertiliser and the treated effluent to irrigation of the plains around Tabriz. The page does not say whether the 1.5 m3/s design flow is for the first module or for the works as built.
